You want a yummy diet soda?
By Herb Drill
Barb and I are “chocoholics.” Generally, if it’s made with chocolate, especially dark chocolate, we like it. My problem is that our family physician, under new lower American Diabetes Association guidelines, has declared me “diabetic.” I don’t need medicine or insulin, but I must control my weight.
What are some of the things I do?
I try to stop eating before I feel full, which translates into smaller portions. I eat sushi infrequently because rice is a carbohydrate extraordinaire. My wife buys the almost-real-thing low-sugar Murray’s version of Oreos, and I eat them instead of her chocolate chip cookies. That hurts.
As a treat, I drink Jeff’s Sodas, which puts out a diet chocolate drink I’ve come to crave especially because it has few carbohydrates. That’s when I have some extra cash (ha-ha!). At Albertson’s supermarkets (near the kosher food for some reason), it’s sold by the not-so-cheap bottle. If you want to be extravagant, or you have a disability and shopping is hard, you can order it online (www.getcreamed.com) and it comes to your door via UPS ground delivery (big-time charge by weight).
A few months ago, I called their Northbrook, Ill. headquarters to inquire if they had other diet flavors in mind. Now comes news Egg Cream America Inc., a leading maker of dairy-based carbonated beverages, has launched its first product line extension of its 97% fat-free, low carbohydrate, low-calorie line. Jeff's Diet Vanilla Soda has been made available to the company's distributors and multiunit retail customers.
The company says Jeff's diet chocolate and diet vanilla sodas have “0.4 g (0%DV) carbohydrates and 20 calories per 10 ounce serving.”
